A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
