Colombian President Warns 'I Would Take Up Arms Once More' should American Forces Intervenes Militarily.

The US President and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone in their verbal conflict, further raising tensions bilaterally after American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs cocaine mills and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump remarked.

Escalating Rhetoric and Claims

Talking to journalists on Sunday, Trump hinted at analogous use of force against Bogotá, claiming the nation is also "very ill" and governed by a problematic figure who enjoys creating cocaine and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the business.

A Frayed Alliance

The country for decades served as a close partner of the US in the struggle combating drug cartels and received cross-party backing from American politicians, however, the relationship have soured dramatically following Trump was elected.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is largely controlled by illegal armed groups such as the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members disbanded after a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Strong Response

Upon being questioned whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and certainly not a drug trafficker," he stated.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he posted online.

"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will become thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom a large part of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the people," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to President

The president dedicated part of his youth participating in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate he did not participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he was involved in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago subsequently becoming an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to abstain from using a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I will take up arms again," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection and Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's personal security was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump, yet figures from all sides of the political spectrum have denounced the notion of an invasion on Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

American authorities revoked his travel authorization following he called on US troops to refuse orders that violate law. Months later, the US enacted economic restrictions targeting Petro, his spouse and various close collaborators.

Concurrently the US was building up its military presence in the region and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out strikes against vessels in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
