The star has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's small live music spots.

Fender was presented with the cheque on October 16 as his new release his work was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

He has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function grassroots venues played in his initial steps.

"I personally wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the shows I played around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, top acts like the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

Fender also participated, generating more than £100,000 on his live tour to help 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation helped locations that were facing imminent closure due to issues caused by flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces received monetary aid in modernizing amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped musicians and fans.

"The concept that money from concerts in large arenas backs the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is among several artists to contribute his honor funds to worthy causes.

Back when the band won the trophy in 1996 for their release Different Class, frontman Cocker stated that the group would donate their winnings to the charity War Child.

That year, musician Ms Dynamite shared her bounty between a few charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

In recent years, the band donated their prize money to the community center that supported their band, in addition to other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients the group gave their award to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the condition.

"Winning was ample," said artist the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our victory touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had protected two small stages in that region, by placing them under local control.

The first in the city and The Croft in the city were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
